Finnish Iron Age Bands 1

Finnish Iron Age Bands 1

A second band weaving project.

I have woven Andean bands for some time now. Next to Andean weaving, I would like to explore another band weaving technique.

I found I like tabletweaving, and there has been some great archeological research done in that field. Some of it can be found in the book ‘Tablet-Woven Treasures, Archaeological Bands from the Finnish Iron Age’, by Karisto & Pasanen (2021).

To learn more about those finds, and about tablet-weaving, I will venture to weave the bands in this book, one by one.

The book states what kind of yarn was used back then. I have learned to spin the thin woolen weaving yarn for Andean Weaving. The yarn for the Finnish bands is not the same, the twist is not as high. But it still is thin woolen weaving yarn. Therefore I will try to make the yarn for the Finnish bands myself, as well as I can.

The process might not be easy or fast, but I like a deep dive. I will post about the process regularly.
