I have spun thin weaving yarn (khaitu) for Andean Weaving. That weaving yarn uses local wool, natural dyes, and is spun on special suspended spindles suited for making very thin yarn ‘on the go, or ‘in between activities’. This yarn can be very, very thin, or less thin, it depends.

To spin the yarn for the Iron Age Bands, I looked at what I need to know to spin such a yarn.
I need to choose the kind of woolen fiber I want to use. I need to decide how thick I want the yarn to be, and I need to decide about the amount of twist the yarn would need to have.

I have looked for a local wool from a sheep-for-sheeping-purposes-sheep. Or, stated otherwise, for wool of a local breed, with nice wool. But also for a breed that has not quite completely been bred for its wool. I have chosen Swifter for this. The wool is a by product, as the Swifter is mostly kept for meat. Swifter wool is a crimpy medium wool. The fiber I use for this project is from a Swifter lambsfleece.

I have dyed the fiber with three different natural colors using the indigo plant (blue), madder (red), and weld (yellow). Afterbaths gave different shades of each color, and overdyes gave even more: a grey (indigo ovedyed with madder), a green (indigo overdyed with weld) and a yellow orange (madder overdyed with weld). This is a post about weaving Finnish Iron Age bands with homespun weaving yarn. I weave the bands listed in the book ‘Tablet Woven Treasures, Archaeological Bands from the Finnish Iron Age’ by Karisto & Pasanen (2021), one by one in the order of the book.

This is a post about weaving Finnish Iron Age bands with spindle spun weaving yarn.
